About the Academy

The Ghungroo Academy of Dance (TGAD) is a dance school in Glasgow, freshly founded in 2025 by Kamalika Ghosh with a mission to spread the joy of learning dance.

The curriculum is primarily based on Bharatanatyam, an ancient Indian classical dance form, known for its dynamic postures and footwork, vibrant costumes and bright expressions. Students are also given the opportunity to learn other dance forms including Indian traditional folk dance and Rabindranritya, for a well-rounded experience in artistic expression.

Although students have the option to follow a fixed exam-based routine or a more relaxed one for recreational purpose only, TGAD emphasizes on providing in-depth knowledge and guidance so that dancers develop a strong understanding of Bharatanatyam and can perform it with correct postures, techniques and expressions.

TGAD aims to participate regularly in various cultural events giving its students exposure to stage performances, thereby building confidence. With an inclusive approach, we welcome dancers of all genders, background, culture, body types and ages (starting 5), to join us and upskill themselves.

About the Founder/Teacher

Kamalika Ghosh began her dance journey at the tender age of 3 in her hometown of Asansol, India, taking the stage for the first time as a toddler. By 5, she had already commenced formal Bharatanatyam training under her Guru, Smt. Madhumita Sarkar.

For the next 10 years, she went through rigorous training and earned the ‘Sangeet Bivakar' award in Bhartanatyam, in First Division with distinction, from Bangiya Sangeet Parishad (affiliated to Rabindra Bharati University) in the year 2005.

Though she pursued a career in software engineering, Kamalika never stepped away from dance. She attended workshops under dance maestro, Dr. Smt. Thankamani Kutty’s institution, Kalamandalam, and continued to perform Bharatanatyam at various college and corporate events.

In 2017, Kamalika rekindled her passion for classroom learning by enrolling in Keshava College of Music and Dance, Bangalore, to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Bharatanatyam under Bangalore University. There, she met her Guru, the late Karnataka Kalashri Dr. B. K. Shyam Prakash, who personally mentored her in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the art. Kamalika excelled in her first year, securing the top position in the Bharatanatyam practical exam.

Although her career led her to relocate from India before completing her B.A. degree in Bharatanatyam, Kamalika continued to refine her art under the guidance of Smt. Esther Sunija at Abhinaya Dance Academy in Glasgow. Since moving to the United Kingdom, she has graced numerous prestigious stages across London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Glasgow, performing at distinguished events hosted by the Indian Consulate, the Glasgow City Council and various cultural organizations of UK.

In 2024, Kamalika established The Ghungroo Revolution, a professional dance troupe featuring adult dancers skilled in diverse classical styles including Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, and Kuchipudi. Among several notable performances, she led the troupe in a captivating showcase of NavaRasa at the Glasgow Mela, and an Indo-Scottish fusion at Sarod & Sopranos presented by SaReGa, where they had the honour of opening for the renowned Sarod maestro, Pandit Prattyush Banerjee.

Kamalika’s deep passion for dance shines through in every step of her way, with Bharatanatyam being her first love. The Ghungroo Academy of Dance has been launched, in 2025, from that place of love. With years of experience in both performing and teaching, she is dedicated to providing the highest quality of training to her students, empowering them to carry forward the rich legacy of this classical art form.
